Why Is the Home Team Playing Abroad? NFL International Games Betting Guide (2026)

The NFL's record nine international games in 2026 have a "home team" that isn't actually at home. Here's how the designation works, which teams are hosting where, and whether it should actually change how you bet.

Why Is the Home Team Playing Abroad? NFL International Games Betting Guide (2026)

Check the spread for the Rams-49ers season opener and you'll see something odd: the Rams are listed as the home team, in a game being played in Melbourne, Australia, roughly 7,500 miles from either team's actual stadium. This isn't a typo, and it isn't the first time it's happened. With a record nine international games spread across seven countries this season, "home team" has become one of the most misunderstood labels in NFL betting. Here's what it actually means, and whether it should change how you bet.

What "Home Team" Actually Means for These Games

When the NFL schedules a game overseas, one team gives up a home date at its own stadium and is designated the official home team for scheduling and broadcast purposes, things like which team wears its home jerseys, whose logo is at midfield, and who technically "hosts" the event. It has nothing to do with which team actually has a local crowd advantage, since neither team is playing anywhere near their own city. Vegas and the major sportsbooks know this, which is why lines for these games are built around team quality and travel burden rather than the usual home-field bump you'd expect from a designation like this.

The Full 2026 International Slate

This year's international games run from September 10 through November 22, spanning Melbourne, Rio de Janeiro, three games in London, Paris, Madrid, Munich, and Mexico City. A few of the confirmed matchups:

  • Rams vs. 49ers - Melbourne Cricket Ground, September 10 (Rams designated home)
  • Saints vs. Browns - Paris (Saints designated home)
  • Jaguars vs. Eagles - Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London, October 11 (Jaguars designated home)
  • Jaguars vs. Texans - Wembley Stadium, London, October 18 (Jaguars designated home)
  • 49ers also host a separate game in Mexico City in December, giving San Francisco two international trips in the same season, a franchise first.

Sixteen of the league's 32 teams appear in at least one international game this year; the other sixteen stay entirely within the US and Canada.

Does the Home Designation Actually Matter for Betting?

Mostly, no, and that's the key thing to understand before you bet one of these games. The usual factors behind home-field advantage, a familiar stadium, no travel fatigue, a crowd skewed toward the home team, mostly don't apply when the game is on a different continent. Sportsbooks account for this by pricing international games closer to a neutral-site line than a true home game, adjusted instead for travel distance, time zone shift, and which team has had more time to prepare for the trip.

The Melbourne opener is the most extreme example this season. Kickoff is 8:35 PM ET Thursday, which lands at 10:35 AM Friday local time in Australia, the widest time gap of any regular-season NFL game. The Rams carry the "home" label, but neither team has any real local advantage, and the market has priced the game more like a coin-flip contest between two teams than a typical home favorite situation.

What to Watch For as a Bettor

A few practical things worth checking before betting any international game this season: how many time zones each team crossed to get there, how much rest each side had heading into the trip, and whether either team has a bye week built in immediately before or after the international game (which can meaningfully offset travel fatigue). The "home team" label itself is close to irrelevant for handicapping purposes, it's really a broadcast and scheduling convention, not a competitive advantage, and treating it as one is one of the more common mistakes casual bettors make on these games.
